The Indian Breast Cancer Survivors Conference (IBCSC) was born from a simple conversation over a cup of coffee between Dr. Sudeep Gupta, Director, Tata Memorial Hospital, and Dr. Shona Nag, Managing Trustee, Nag Foundation. Their shared vision was to create a dedicated platform for breast cancer survivors—one that would address the unique challenges faced after treatment and provide a safe, supportive space where survivors could discuss their doubts, fears, and concerns, both physical and psychological, while connecting with others who had walked a similar journey.
This vision became a reality with the FIRST two-day Indian Breast Cancer Survivors Conference, held on 6th and 7th October 2012 in Pune. The conference was jointly supported by the Women’s Cancer Initiative, Manavata Cancer Centre, Nashik, and Breast Friends, Pune. More than 200 breast cancer survivors from across Western Maharashtra participated, making it one of the first dedicated survivorship conferences in India. The scientific programme focused on helping survivors manage the long-term effects of cancer and its treatment, with sessions on treatment-related side effects, nutrition, exercise, yoga, and complementary therapies such as homeopathy.
As the conference evolved, so did its scope. Continuous interaction with survivors helped identify emerging and often overlooked concerns. In response, subsequent conferences expanded to include sessions on sexuality and intimacy, genetics, mental health, fear of recurrence, body image, survivorship care, complementary and alternative therapies, nutrition, exercise, and quality of life. The conference has remained committed to addressing the holistic needs of survivors, empowering them with knowledge, practical skills, and emotional support to lead healthy and fulfilling lives beyond cancer.
Over the years, the IBCSC has grown into one of India’s leading survivorship initiatives, bringing together survivors, caregivers, healthcare professionals, researchers, and patient advocates.

Feedback from our survivors

The breast cancer survivor conference in Pune was a great opportunity for cancer survivors to learn more about the healthy lifestyle and mental health awareness. Dr Shona Nag spoke about survivorship care from the Indian perspective. The panel discussion topic “What to expect after the treatment “was very well planned and highly informative. Dr Gadgil spoke well about what happens in a follow up. The highlight of the program was the panel discussion of the survivors with Mrs Devika Bhojwani where we heard the first-hand experience from the survivors and highly motivated by Poorva Gadiya and other survivors. The dance and art therapy were also very good and relaxing. Thank you Nag foundation for the great work you do.

Attending the Breast Cancer Survivors Conference was both inspiring and educational. I learned that early detection can save lives and that advances in treatment are giving many women more hope than ever before. What stayed with me the most were the stories shared by the survivors. Their courage, strength, and positive attitude were truly inspiring. I also realized that healing is about more than medical treatment—it is about emotional support, healthy living, and having people who stand by you throughout the journey. I left the conference with a deeper appreciation for the resilience of breast cancer survivors and the importance of creating awareness, encouraging early detection, and supporting every woman through her journey with compassion and hope.

The IBCSC has been knowledgeable and a pleasure to attend. Meeting the BC survivors, being able to communicate with them, listening to their experiences and journey through their diagnosis and treatment was conducive in minimising our trials and experiences. The doctors discussed various topics and issues faced by patients which were helpful. Fun activities and entertainment were also enjoyed by all.

Year in Review – Breast Cancer (YIR) is an annual academic conference conceptualized by Dr Sudeep Gupta of Tata Memorial Hospital and Dr Shona Nag of Nag Foundation. The conference is jointly organized by the Women’s Cancer Initiative, Tata Memorial Hospital, and Nag Foundation.
Designed as a premier educational forum for oncology professionals, YIR brings together hundreds of medical oncologists, surgical oncologists, radiation oncologists, physicians, trainees, researchers, and allied healthcare professionals to critically review and discuss the most important advances in breast cancer from the previous year.
The conference provides a comprehensive update on landmark clinical trials, practice-changing research, major international oncology meetings, and newly published treatment guidelines. Knowledge is disseminated through expert lectures, panel discussions, interactive conversations, case-based learning, and constructive debates, enabling participants to translate the latest evidence into everyday clinical practice.
YIR serves as a platform for meaningful dialogue among experts and clinicians, encouraging the exchange of ideas and fostering collaboration across disciplines. By presenting evidence in the context of real-world clinical practice, the conference helps healthcare professionals make informed treatment decisions and deliver high-quality, evidence-based care.
The ultimate goal of Year in Review – Breast Cancer is to improve clinical practice and patient outcomes by ensuring that oncology professionals remain current with the rapidly evolving landscape of breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, and survivorship.
In addition to the annual conference, members of the Year in Review community receive timely updates on significant oncology meetings, continuing medical education (CME) opportunities, educational resources, and other learning initiatives that support lifelong professional developmentImpact of the Conference

The pre-conference sessions were extremely valuable, especially for early-career oncologists. They not only highlighted the latest scientific advances but also offered practical guidance on navigating the evolving field of oncology within today’s corporate healthcare environment. The main conference was exceptionally well organised. I particularly appreciated how the abstract presentations were grouped by breast cancer subtype, making it easier to understand the latest evidence and apply it to clinical practice. The updates on targeted therapies, antibody-drug conjugates (ADCs), and ongoing clinical trials were both informative and relevant. Overall, the conference was inspiring, educational, and highly relevant to my clinical practice. It strengthened my understanding of modern breast cancer management and gave me greater confidence as I begin my career in oncology.
