The diagnosis of cancer is accompanied by a myriad of emotions, confusion of information and an overwhelming pressure of treatment decisions. No cancer treatment is without its challenges. Nurses in all oncology settings provide professional clinical, psycho–social, and emotional support to their patients and their caregivers.
Building on this foundation, the role of our nurses extends beyond preparation and administration of treatments. They also ensure that care remains centred around the needs of the patients, providing access to evidence-based information relevant to their disease and treatments.
Nurses in the Oncology department are involved in highly specialised knowledge of complex treatments, managing severe side effects, providing essential patient/family education, and offering critical psychosocial support, all of which improve patient outcomes, safety, and quality of life, skills not covered in general nursing education. Specialised training ensures nurses can handle technical procedures in all cancer treatment protocols, offer emotional resilience, and empower patients in the management of side effects. Nurses are also trained to address community awareness and promote screening for early detection for better prognosis.
